If you’ve followed me on social media this week, you’ve seen me posting memories of the 4 marathons I’ve run over the last 10 years- October 4, 2015, October 14th, 2018, October 13th, 2019, and October 10th, 2021.
As I’ve been reminiscing this week, I’ve come to appreciate just how impactful those events have been for me.
I’ve always been a “I’m being prepared for something down the road that I may or may not ever know how or why” kind of person as it relates to misfortune, difficult times, and trials and hurdles.
This week’s anniversary of marathons has made me realize that these intentionally planned running experiences have unknowingly prepared me to be a successful entrepreneur.
And the beautiful medal rack that my dad built for me perfectly captures the essence of today’s blog….

The consistent acts of courage, the guts to try something new, the uncertainty of outcome, risking success, figuring it out along the way, and the resilience to keep going- all that accompany running a marathon, quietly conditioned me to take a leap of heart to be the successful small business owner that I am.
There’s such parallel of essential attributes and elements between “marathon success” and “small business success”…
📍 Instinct/idea
📍 Clarity of vision and priorities
📍An “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” plan/framework
📍A ”good enough” foundational capacity
📍An abundance mindset
📍Support of people who genuinely believe in you
📍Expert guidance
📍Positive self-belief and personal agency
📍Stamina to endure- mental and physical
📍Grit to do the “undesirable”
📍Flexibility and adaptability
📍Perseverance
📍Confidence to do the “hard things”
📍Strength and conditioning
📍Faith and trust in the process
📍Routine celebration of milestone achievements and overall progress
📍Sacrifice
📍Refined rhythms and practices aligned with goals
📍 Resilience and tenacity to move beyond adverse circumstances, critical people & tough days
📍 Smug, humble, and proud
I am certain that you can relate- whether you ran a marathon, or are a small business owner, or not, the attributes and character of someone who runs 26.2 miles or starts their own business, universally apply to anyone’s “success”.
How have you unknowingly prepared yourself for your success?
