Wilfulness Wednesday- Fourteenth Edition

Gift yourself grace- nurturing your mental health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  Established in 1949, Mental Health Awareness Month aims to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness.

Self-grace is an essential element of wellness, especially mental wellness. It is way too easy (for whatever reason) for us to be hard on ourselves, be critical of ourselves and get down about ourselves.  We’re in charge of our self-talk, our self-love and our self-pride.  We’re responsible for giving ourselves grace & compassion.

Grace allows us to reflect, accept, and create expanded opportunities to be kind to ourselves- kindness at a level we often extend to others.

Grace isn’t an excuse; it’s about, first, putting ourselves at ease AND then, prompting some form of action, whether that’s self-care, attending to a relationship, or taking responsibility for your choices.

I disrupted my weekly streak of Wilfulness Wednesdays blog posts.  I had an unexpected priority present itself last week and I needed to allocate my time elsewhere.  Did I feel uneasy about?  You bet!  I had created an expectation for myself that I enjoyed and was proud of.  As I navigated last week’s stress-inducing situation, I just needed to reflect on, accept, and instead allocate my time and thought into a more pressing task.  Imposing stress on myself for not doing the blog would have been harmful to both my mental and physical wellness.

Think about your self-grace practices?  How satisfied are you?  When was the last time you gave yourself grace for an expectation you set for yourself?  What did you notice about the benefits of self-grace and self-compassion? How can you do more of it?

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you strengthen your self-grace and self-compassion muscles…

  • Do one thing a day you’re proud of.
  • Never feel selfish for taking “you” time. …
  • Mess up, but don’t let yourself feel bad. …
  • Give yourself permission to not do everything. …
  • Don’t strive to be perfect, be real. No one is perfect….

Be well!
